Two factors make them attractively cheap. One is the weakness of the euro, which has lost 15% against the Chinese yuan, 19% against the Japanese yen and 9% against the dollar since the start of 2010. Cash-strapped firms that cannot borrow often try to raise equity instead. Many are looking outside Italy. Foreign direct investment has soared. From the last quarter of 2009 to the third quarter of 2010, Italy attracted only $796m. The next year the inflow jumped eightfold, to $6.6 billion. Cheap luxury is often the lure. Italy is packed with financially precarious firms that make desirable products with glamorous brand names. Some also boast superb technology. For Chinese buyers, this is irresistible. Many Chinese firms have cash, but few have global brands.

De Tomaso, a maker of sporty cars, has been in financial trouble for years. Hotyork Investment, a Chinese group, senses a bargain. In January it said it would buy 80% of De Tomaso for 60m ($79m). Hotyork reckons cars made with sexy Italian design, technology and craftsmanship will wow Chinese drivers. Hotyork is not alone. Earlier this year, Shandong Heavy Industry Group of China bought 75% of Ferretti, a builder of luxury yachts that had previously bounced between banks and private-equity funds. In December Eland World, a South Korean retailer, bought 49% of Coccinelle, a firm that makes fashionable handbags, for 15.5m; Coccinelle's parent firm, Mariella Burani Fashion Group, went bust in 2010. Italy is famous for food as well as luxury: in January Princes, a British subsidiary of Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation, said it would buy 51% of a giant tomato-processing business in southern Italy.

Italy has not historically been a magnet for cross-border investment. Emma Marcegaglia, the president of Confindustria, Italy's bosses' club, blames red tape, slow justice, high taxes and a rigid labour market. However, the perception of Italy has improved recently: the euro crisis has cooled a bit, and the arrival in November of a technocratic government led by Mario Monti, a former European commissioner, promising lots of economic reforms, has soothed investors' collywobbles.

Many Italian firms are family-owned and about as keen to sell up as their 30-year-old sons are to leave home. But some of the more ambitious ones realise that, if they want to expand, they must look abroad for capital. Gancia, a wine and vermouth firm with burdensome debts of 35m, sold a 70% stake to Russian Standard Corporation, a Moscow-based firm whose business is a rum cocktail of drinks and financial services, last December. The Gancia brand is popular in Italy but faces slim margins and weak growth. Paolo Fontana, the firm's managing director, says he wants to see exports increase from 25% to 80% of sales. Russian control should boost sales in Russia and could help relaunch Gancia in America, Britain and Germany, where it was strong 40 years ago. MONEY is perhaps the most basic building-block in economics. It helps states collect taxes to fund public goods. It allows producers to specialise and reap gains from trade. It is clear what it does, but its origins are a mystery. Some argue that money has its roots in the power of the state. Others claim the origin of money is a purely private matter: it would exist even if governments did not. This debate is long-running but it informs some of the most pressing monetary questions of today.

Money fulfils three main functions. First, it must be a medium of exchange, easily traded for goods and services. Second, it must be a store of value, so that it can be saved and used for consumption in the future. Third, it must be a unit of account, a useful measuring-stick. Lots of things can do these jobs. Karl Menger, an Austrian economist, set out one school of thought as long ago as 1892*. In his version of events, the monetisation of an economy starts when agricultural communities move away from subsistence farming and start to specialise. This brings efficiency gains but means that trade with others becomes necessary. The problem is that operating markets on the basis of barter is a pain: you have to scout around looking for the rare person who wants what you have and has what you want.

Money evolves to reduce barter costs, with some things working better than others. The commodity used as money should not lose value when it is bought and sold. So clothing is a bad money, since no one places the same value on second-hand clothes as new ones. Instead, something that is portable, durable (fruit and vegetables are out) and divisible into smaller pieces is needed. Menger called this property “saleableness”. Spices and shells are highly saleable, explaining their use as money. Government plays no role here. The origin of money is a market-led response to barter costs, in which the best money is that which minimises the costs of trade. Menger’s is a good description of how informal monies, such as those used by prisoners, originate.

But the story just doesn’t match the facts in most monetary economies, according to a 1998 paper** by Charles Goodhart of the London School of Economics. Take the widespread use of precious metals as money. A Mengerian would say that this happens because metals are durable, divisible and portable: that makes them an ideal medium of exchange. But it is incredibly hard to value raw metals, Mr Goodhart argued, so the cost of using them in trade is high. It is much easier to assess the value of a bag of salt or a cow than a lump of metal. Raw metals fail Menger’s own saleableness test.

This problem explains why metal money has circulated not in lumps but as coins, with a regulated amount of metal in each coin. But history shows that minting developed not as a private-sector attempt to minimise the costs of trading, but as a government operation. It was state intervention, not the private market, that made metal specie work as money.

That suggests another theory is needed, in which the state plays a bigger role in the origin of money. Mr Goodhart called this the “Cartalist” theory. The fiscal wing of government has a huge incentive to move its economy away from barter. Once money exists, income and expenditure can be measured. That means they can be taxed. And the public purse gets a second boost from seigniorage, the difference between the value of the coins and the cost of producing them. On this account, governments impose taxes payable only in money, creating a demand for money that means it will be widely accepted as payment for goods. The state forces the economy away from barter for its own fiscal purposes.

Mr Goodhart used monetary history to test these competing theories. He examined the overthrow of Rome and a period in the tenth century when the Japanese government stopped minting coins. If the origin of money were purely private, these shocks should have had no monetary effects. But after Rome’s collapse, traders resorted to barter; in Japan they started to use rice instead of coins. There is a clear link between fiscal power and money.

The evidence suggests that only “informal” monies can spring up purely privately. But informal money can exist on the grandest scale. The dollar’s position as the world’s reserve currency is not mandated by any government, for example. Its pre-eminence outside America rests on it being the best option for international transactions. Once a competitor currency becomes preferable, firms and other governments will move on. The good news for the dollar is that the Chinese yuan is not yet widely accepted and suffers from higher inflation, reducing its usefulness. But a shift in the world’s reserve currency could be swifter than many assume.

The dollar’s other competitor, the euro, has deeper problems. Its origins were not private. Nor is it a proper Cartalist money, backed by a nation state. This means it lacks a foundation in the power of either the market or the state. In his paper, written a year before the euro was introduced, Mr Goodhart was prescient, highlighting “an unprecedented divorce between the main monetary and fiscal authorities”. Cartalists, he said “worry whether the divorce may not have some unforeseen side effects”.

The big day would be Oct. 2, the two young men announced, and anyone was welcome to attend. For the precise location, a prospective guest needed only contact the instant chat address included in the tweet. And for those still unclear about the parties to be married, the couple attached several affectionate engagement photos. In the days that followed, they received RSVPs and a few hundred dollars worth of donations to defray the costs associated with what they hoped would be a traditional ceremony.

In some sense, there’s not that much new here. China’s first public (and illegal) gay marriage, so named by the media, took place in 2010 in the southwestern metropolis of Chengdu and was given sympathetic coverage by Communist Party-owned news outlets at the time. Proposals to legalize gay marriage have been introduced (and ignored) at the People’s Political Consultative Conference, China’s mostly ceremonial rubber-stamp legislature, for almost a decade. Though there are no statistics on just how many gay marriages (public or private) have taken place, growing activism for the legalization of the unions attracts significant media and netizen attention.

One reason for the increased awareness is that China is opening up to the fact that it is home, by one expert’s calculation, to some 10 million marriages between gay men and straight women. A less common, but equally well-known analog is for a gay man and a lesbian to marry legally while remaining loyal to their same-sex partners. These sham marriages are closet-re-enforcing ruses pursued under social pressure to produce offspring, among other familial duties. They also have something that illegal gay marriages don’t: legal protections that range from the right of inheritance to the benefits of divorce law in the case of a marital breakdown.

Still, the ubiquity of sham legal marriages doesn’t guarantee the acceptance of legal marriages between same-sex partners any time soon. After all, in China homosexuality was illegal as recently as 1997 and listed as a psychosis as recently as 2001. Liu and Lu, as a public example of a committed gay couple, have positioned themselves within an ongoing public debate that places China’s traditional biases against homosexuality at odds with new demographic realities and a young, microblogging generation that prioritizes personal freedom.

The reaction to Lu and Liu’s invitation proved as much. Their tweet quickly garnered 500 re-tweets (or “forwards,” in Sina Weibo parlance) and nearly 200 comments, the vast majority of which were congratulatory and -- based on a brief scan -- seemingly offered by a predominantly youthful set of followers. That’s small-time traffic by the standards of China’s microblogs, but it was big enough to be noticed by the authorities in Ningde, the modest-sized city in Fujian province where the tweet announced that the wedding was supposed to be held.

According to a recently published interview with Lu, the local authorities were less than thrilled with the idea of a gay wedding in their jurisdiction, and in the days running up to the big day, they canvassed local hotels and karaokes (likely wedding venues) in hopes of finding and halting the ceremony.

Why? It’s unclear. The local government hasn’t released a statement, and in interviews and tweets the couple has been reluctant to describe or explain the government’s behavior. Still, Ningde is a smaller city in a largely rural province, and social norms there -- especially among the older generation and those in leadership -- are surely more conservative than in China’s bigger and more modern cities. Equally likely, the conservative, promotion-minded authorities weren’t keen to find themselves leading a city that microblogs would soon dub the home of “Fujian’s First Gay Marriage.”

Even government pressure could not deter Lu and Liu. In a daring bit of romantic bravado, they dropped whatever venue they’d originally planned for the wedding and instead led a motor scooter motorcade into the center of Ningde and held a very public ceremony. Video taken of the event suggests that it was attended by several hundred (at least) seemingly spontaneous well-wishers who, it can safely be assumed, would’ve reacted poorly to any law enforcement action against the young couple. The video was uploaded and began to circulate via microblogs, without impediment from online censors.

However, likely because the wedding took place in the midst of an eight-day national holiday that was enjoyed by journalists, too, it didn’t really generate much in the way of posts, stories or discussion until the middle of last week. By the time media outlets did pick up the story, their tone was sympathetic and congratulatory -- especially toward China for having such an open-minded attitude on gay marriage. Xinhua, the Communist Party-owned national news wire, headlined its Oct. 20 story, “Gay Wedding Reflects Growing Tolerance in China” and failed to mention the harassment and discrimination that Lu and Liu faced in Ningde. Rather, the article extolled the wedding as a sign of social progress against traditional biases toward gays and lesbians.

For all the sympathetic news coverage, China’s leading newspapers and news sites have yet to write editorials formalizing their sympathy toward to Lu and Liu, much less their support of gay marriage. This is no accident: Editorials printed in Communist Party-owned papers are tantamount to official position papers, and for now, at least, officials don’t appear ready to issue statements in favor of liberalizing marriage laws to permit a type of union that was a criminal offense not so long ago.

Still, there are prominent individual voices willing to write in favor of gay marriage and well-established venues willing -- and allowed -- to publish these opinions. Last Thursday, for example, Wu Chunmei, a prolific writer, published “The Ethical and Legal Challenges of the Fujian Marriage,” on a popular state-owned opinion site with wide editorial latitude. The essay has been widely syndicated and circulated in recent days, and the arguments it makes echo those that have been put forth in favor of gay marriage, in a less formal manner, on Chinese microblogs for the last several years:

“Our Law of Marriage expressly stipulates that marriage is between a man and a woman, and that means that same-sex marriage hasn’t been recognized by law yet. So, strictly speaking, the marriage of these two men is without legal validity or protection. Thus this extravagant wedding is just a cathartic scream by these gay men, as well as an overt provocation designed to challenge the marriage law and traditional morality. They’re expressing their aspirations, their longing for respect and confirmation, their quest for acceptance and blessings.”

Wu concludes her piece with a broad statement in favor of personal freedom against the incursions of the state. For many members of China’s older generations, it’s an alien theme (though by no means unacceptable). But for young Chinese raised in an era of ever-widening sexual freedom (both granted and grasped), the language she chooses is nothing less than self- evident:

“The creation of law is based on the principle that it does not encroach on the interests of the majority. At a time when the number of gays increases day by day, and people’s attitudes toward gay marriage become more and more open, why can’t homosexuals be accepted -- especially when they do no harm to other people and society?”

Ironically, Lu, when interviewed on Friday by a journalist with the Netease internet portal about his reasons for wanting a public wedding ceremony, avoided talk of social acceptance and change, and explained, simply: “I’m quite traditional, quite conservative, and I simply wanted the feeling of having a wedding.”

That’s hardly the angry cry of a social revolutionary, and perhaps such composed restraint bodes well for the future of gay unions in China. Whether or not it does, however, doesn’t appear to be Lu’s immediate concern: These days, he and Liu are on their honeymoon, crossing China by train.
